Thank you for your support of The Community Schools at
Opportunity Farm and Camden. In September, we welcomed
new students to our campuses in Camden and New
Gloucester, and we expanded our Passages Program for
teen parents to three new counties! We are now serving 52
students, all of whom are working toward high school
graduation. All of them have accomplished a tremendous
amount during the first three months of the school year.
Here are a few highlights:
Each of our Residential Program students now has a
part time job in the community
All of our students have completed service learning
projects with local youth and seniors, with local arts
and environmental groups, and with local animal shelters
All of our Residential students are learning American
Sign Language, and recently produced their own sign
language cooking shows
They are all learning to plan and prepare meals on
a budget, and are studying the localvore movement
They have participated in several college campus tours,
and have also gone on hiking, rock climbing and
wilderness camping expeditions
They are writing their own poems, studying documentary
film and attending science lab
They are also participating in weekly creative writing
classes, and working in the art lab at the Center for
Maine Contemporary Art
They are studying math, social justice and diversity
and environmental science
They hosted a Global Thanksgiving at Opportunity
Farm, and a spaghetti supper fundraiser in Camden
During the next semester, they will travel to New York City,
visit more colleges, and host a community coffee house at
Opportunity Farm. They will learn to plant their own crops,
they will clear hiking trails at the farm campus, and they
will continue to work out daily at the YMCA.
All the while they are gaining the skills and experience necessary
to discover their strengths, connect with their families, practice
personal responsibility, and contribute to their communities.
We hope you will join us in supporting this important work.
Thank you,
